1s go to battle
By Georgie Ballard
Women’s 1s travelled to University of Birmingham knowing today’s game was going to be a hard fought battle. Playing with the sun in their eyes for the first half the game went from one end to the other. Birmingham scored early on through a counter attack, but Worcester dug deep and held their ground, especially after a string of short corners. With the team pushing high Birmingham went on the counter attack several times, but the defence held firm until Birmingham eventually doubled their lead. That didn’t hold Worcester back and the continued to dig deep, creating chances before a quickly taken free hit by Lyndsey Beynon, was given to H Davenport, who got the ball into the circle for Holly Smith to calmly reverse stick shot past the keeper. Worcester held firm at the end of the half and the beginning of the second with some hard defending and vital tackles by Helen Barnes, Lottie Wade, Lyndsey and Daisy Perry-Mitchell. Worcester continued to find ways into the Birmingham defence including a short corner, before Holly Smith found her way through the defence and after trying to get the ball past the keeper, slipped it across the front of the goal for Vicky Howell to jab it into the goal. Both teams continued to create chances and unfortunately in the final 5 minutes Birmingham players beat a couple of Worcester players and played the ball past Jenny Ross-Thomas in goal. Worcester continued to fight to the final whistle and were unlucky not to come away with a point. With the opposition stating we have given them the most competitive and best game of the season the 1s can take a lot away. Well battled by all who played!
Silly Moment of the Day went to Helen Bailey, player of the match to Helen Barnes.
