Over 50s vs Bath Buccaneers

Worcester 050s reward for an away win in Bristol was another away trip to National League Team Bath Buccs.

Having played in the area for 20 years I knew this would be tough but was even more daunting when they called upon several guests including 2 current Wales 50s players.

The home side started on the front foot and dominated the opening ten minutes. The tactic of smashing the ball in hard to the circle resulting in a shot or defenders foot allowed them the luxury of 3 penalty corners in that period. 2 expertly converted it must be said.
Many a team would have folded but slowly but surely Worcester got their game together. The defenders manned up to some very physical play and started to work the ball out from the back very nicely. The midfield although congested was even, Evo and Thommo started to see more ball which then bought Gerry and Aldo in the equation. More joy was gained down our left and that’s where our goal came from. A crashed ball into the circle from Flish; deflected by Thommo into the bottom right hand corner. Touchee!

Worcester were now more confident and in the remaining minutes of the half should have done better following a break away from a well defended Buccs PC , better decision making on the early pass would have resulted in a one on one with the keeper. Buccs went straight down the other end and won a corner on the whistle. Fearing the worst a change was made on duties and successfully defended.

At half time the skipper made a couple of changes in personnel and positions , Hubbo into midfield which made a difference , but the biggest change came from the players themselves. A belief we had seen the best Buccs could offer and we could get back into the game. We kept the ball far better there was positive forward quick passing in midfield , sometimes short sometimes longer but mostly our passing was excellent. I cant remember anyone giving the ball away in our own half at all and our dominance on the ball led to chances and set pieces in the oppositions 23m. All good stuff.
Now it was Worcester winning penalty corners one of which was converted by Thommo. Worcester were now by far the better side and the frustration was coming from the home side who from being dominant relied on breakaways .
We couldn’t find a winner in the moment we bossed the game late on and as usual the other side always seem to take advantage and won a PC right at the death however the culprit made amends by running down the barrel and blocking the shot. Game over.

After our our last victory we were confident on PS .
Buccs converted the first. The reliable Thommo released such a powerful flick the keeper didn’t see it but it was just over the bar and currently in orbit. All remaining strokes were converted meaning we couldn’t catch up

This was a proper game of masters hockey. The standard of play higher than any of the games last year.
Many thanks to all the players who worked so hard and played so well. It sounds odd for masters side to say we are developing but that’s very true of this group We have played better hockey than last season but gone out of the championship earlier.
Its also worth noting that in a season where we have struggled to get numbers out the 50s have travelled away twice and gone with 14 on each occasion.
No man of the match as everyone played their part which was not lost on the opposition in the bar afterwards who were very complimentary
