Terrific game at Worcester Uni yesterday afternoon, despite a still dodgy pitch, saw the Pippins, undefeated all season in the Badger League take on a makeshift 11 made up of players from the Men's 6's, 7's and 8's and the Women's 3's, 4's and 5's.
A brilliant end-to-end game saw the Pippins more than holding their own against their adult counterparts and if anything the adult keeper was the more busy during the match.
The fans were in good voice, with a selection of Festive songs being heard resonating around the Uni astro. Good to see Immi Gilgrass and Jemima Moss returning to play against their former teammates. The game also gave Adrian Shipley the chance to play against his son, Austin, the Pippins goalkeeper for the first time ever! Luckily for Daddy Shipley (and unluckily for Austin) he managed to score the only goal of the game towards then end of the second half, having missed a couple earlier in the match.
The Pippins, managed by Nick Fielden, can be VERY proud of their achievements this season - undefeated in the League, with over 50 goals scored and only 5 conceded and this game gave the team the opportunity to see how they would fair against regular adult team players, be they from the Men's or Women's section. It will have allayed a few fears about what playing against adult opposition is like and they will have learnt that the step up from Badgers to Adult hockey is not quite the 'giant leap' they might have imagined. On another day, it could quite easily have been the Pippins who nicked the win 1-0, while at the same time, if all possible chances had been converted, it could have been a Festive 5-5 goal-fest!!
Thanks to Barrie and Jean Roberts for umpiring, at least, we think it was Barrie and Jean - they looked like a couple of Santa's elves!!
Thanks also to the Wheatsheaf for post-match hospitality.
Happy Christmas to everyone & Best Wishes for 2016. I'm sure everyone who played in the game yesterday will be keen for a New Year re-match to be organised. It was great fun, played out in good spirits and the assembled crowd at the side of the pitch seemed to enjoy the spectacle, as did the players from both sides.
Finally, in the words of Pippins Manager, Nick Fielden, "Have a wonderful festive season, relax & be merry; then come back in January ready to play!"
