Sunday 31st January 2016:
Worcester 4 Edgbaston 2.
After drawing their game the day before, Worcester knew that a win was a must if there was any chance of a big finish for this years league. With Edgbaston beating Harborne the previous day Worcester had a chance to close the gap at the top of the table however the question was, Could Steve the pirate finish his dinner?
Playing at the Grange meant that there was no blaming the pitch if Worcester werent to win all 3 points. With James still crying about the scratch on his leg and Tom Dalton about his 'Bad week' the time had come for the start of the game.
The game started fast and Edgbaston didnt hold back with poor decision making at the back rewarding their player with an early shot at goal. Worcester slowly grew in to the game and started to play good hockey despite the RB forgetting that you need to mark. after some quick skills from joe barker and dom worcester were awarded with the first short corner of the game. Hoops stepped up top D like a man possessed, smashing the ball bottom left to give worcester an early lead, it's worth noting that Hoops' goal drought had until then lasted longer than the drought in Africa. Worcester continued to push immediately after scoring and with a brilliant ball down the left from James and some quick skills and shot from Dom, Worcester found themselves 2 nil up. shame the celebration wasnt the teapot Dom!
Joe Sullivan seemed to always be first to every loose ball without kicking it, someone had had their weetabix that morning or was it the cheeky wee in the showers prematch that got him pumped?... Worcester reacted slowly to some quick play from Edgbaston and a ball across the D cost them a goal making it 2:1.
During the halftime teamtalk Watling made it extremely clear that the use of Max's Aerials down the left was the best way to expose Edgbastons defence and that Henry had one job second half of making the most of these. It only took Henry 2 minutes in to the 2nd half to forget this and miss the best aerial of the game, maybe he had other things on his mind.
Some quick passing from Ollie, Joe Barker and Steve created some good chances in their D with one loose ball falling in front of Steve.. Fortunately for Worcester Steve reacted like lightning and with the biggest swing in hockey finished his dinner. Yes.. Steve scored!
Immediately after Edgbaston played two very clinical passes around the midfield and defense giving them another quick goal to keep the game interesting. As Worcester fought to hold on to their lead Joe Hughes found himself matched for pace with Edgbastons striker and as Joe stripped the ball from him the whole pitch echoed with a squeel louder than Watling from the striker as he tumbled down to the ground. Joe was quick to apologies and reinforce that it wasn’t him, sorry sorry sorry!!!
As their player was being treated this gave Chris time to get the players together, well all apart from Joe Barker. I think his family heard Chris shouting JB JB JBBB!!! from over the wall up north. As play continued Both James and Joe Hughes stepped forward with possession leaving the unlikely figures of Joe Sullivan and Hoops playing CB. Worcester pushed for a 4th goal to kill the game with good all-round play from Henry and Puggy. This good play was rewarded with a short corner however when they set up for the short corner Joe Sullivan thought to take the ball for himself and try a shot rather than being a team player and following the routine.
Finally the 4th goal for Worcester came after a period of possession as Worcester waited to find the right time to play the ball forward. A quick ball from sully gave his brother Dom a 1 on 1 opportunity, which he calmly took past the keeper and slotted home for his second goal.
After a long weekend Worcester ended it on a high with a big win. Some good performances all round with Joe Sullivan earning the Man of the match award meaning Joe Hughes only held that award for less than 24 hours. Snakes. Unfortunately Puggy earnt the opposite award this week after deciding to go for Sunday lunch instead of post-match celebrations, Hockey first Puggy!
On to the Stourport game in 2 weeks time
