Women's 1s Final Game of the season review 25/26

Read about the Women's 1s game vs Ashby 1s

The final game of the season saw us host Ashby at home, hoping for a win to end our recent run of draws and losses.
With Twiggy, H and Laura on England duty at the Indoor World Cup, we were looking light in midfield. Laura did come back to coach the match, but she ‘probably wouldn’t play’, and if she did play would make sure not to score or get a card so it wouldn’t be noted on the league website.
Thanks to a one-man campaign from Hoops, the league finally allowed Cass to play, so she stepped into midfield with Mia Lilley joining us up front. Due to having 5 defenders and 1 forward, Helen Barnes swapped centre back for centre forward.
Worcester started well moving the ball well with some good 2 touch hockey and looked dominant. The ball was crossed to Barnes in the D who earned her money with a confident deflection for Worcester’s first goal.
A hail downpour stopped play for 5 mins allowing both teams to regroup in the dugouts, Worcester finished the first half 1-0 and in control of the game.
2nd half Ashby equalised with a short corner, captain Sophie seemed frustrated so took a 5 min breather for Laura to come onto the pitch. Laura was shortly off the pitch again after being awarded a green card, however, came back on to score Worcester’s second goal from a brilliant short corner strike. So much for no cards or goals.
Worcester kept control for the rest of the half, with 2 minutes to go were advised to keep everything tight…with 1 minute left a long ball from Ashby was intercepted but not fully cleared, leading to a last-minute equaliser from Ashby, almost a carbon copy of what happened with our last home game draw against Sutton, and the third week in a row that our oppo have got a late goal. Something to work on for next season!
Despite a disappointing last few weeks of the season the women’s 1s have so much to be proud of. We’ve beaten the 2 teams that were promoted, only lost 1 home game, brought in new players, tried out different formations, and worked hard for each other. 24 people have played 1s across the season and I don’t think we’ve ever had the same team out twice. None of the last 5 results have had any bearing on our league standing, and we finish in the same position as last season, a respectable 4th.
A big thank you to Laura for all her hard work, passion and dedication on and off the pitch, to everyone that’s played for us this season, everyone that’s come to watch, the umpires and officials, Mez and the catering team at the club.
POM: Mia and Cass
DOD: We don’t vote for this but Alex and Lucy helped themselves to jacket potatoes they hadn’t ordered leaving captain Sophie hungry and potato-less.
Captain’s Player of the Season: Lucy G
Players Player of the Season: H
Onwards and upwards to next season!
